The requirements for position papers are as follows: (download pdf version here)
An example position paper can be found here
A position paper is a brief overview of the delegate’s strategy towards the committee issues, from the perspective of the country being represented. Position papers clearly outline a country’s policy towards the issues at hand before the committee. Also, position papers serve as an important outline from which the delegate may begin formulating more comprehensive arguments.
1. All position papers must be in Times New Roman font, size 12 and must be at least 500 words (not more than 1200 words) , with standard margins.
2. Properly identify your position paper. In the top left corner, write which country you are representing and in the top right corner, write your name and school.
3. The title of the position paper should be, “Position Paper for the (Committee)””, in italics.
4. Number the topics, as shown in the example.
5. The body of the policy for each topic should contain the following elements:
a) A general statement clearly stating the country’s position.
b) An elaboration of the policy, which may include references to past UN or other action, agreements the country has ratified or anything else that may be relevant.
c) References to the country’s past experiences with the topic if any.
d) A conclusion restating the country’s policy.
6. Do not use first person when discussing a policy. Instead, use expressions such as: “our government”, “our country”, “our nation”, the country name, etc.
7. You do not need a list of references. (Make a list of them and keep them for
your own personal usage)

Welcome Delegates and Faculty Advisors,
On behalf of this year’s Secretariat, I am proud to announce the theme for our 13th annual model United Nations’ symposium, CHAMUN 2012: Bridging the Divide, which takes place February 29th to March 2nd . A model UN is no small endeavor, involving lots of hard work, organization and teamwork. Our secretariat has been working as diligently as ever, ensuring that the conference is both an enriching and an enjoyable experience.
This year’s symposium will consist of two committees: The General Assembly and a specialized Crisis Committee. In our General Assembly, delegates will be discussing issues as diverse as the fall of the Eurozone and the HIV/Aids Crisis. As well, they will have the opportunity to examine the ever-present threat of our planet’s rising climate, a crisis that is at the tipping point. Our Crisis Committee will explore George Lucas’ Star Wars Galaxy with delegates taking on various roles in the Star Wars Saga.
The debates of CHAMUN 2012 will embody the principles of the United Nations: cooperation, discussion, and enlightenment. Delegates will work together towards Bridging the Divide that separates us both as individuals and as nations.
I look forward to seeing you all at CHAMUN 2012, working together to resolve the world’s crises and gain new perspective on the critical importance of the United Nations as they strive to achieve their Millennium Goals of 2015.
Best Regards,
Tobias Paul
Secretary General
